When we talk about creating dementia-friendly environments, it’s feedback like this one from Barnet Hospital that really show the impact these changes can make.
Senior Matron Tracy Goodman got in touch to share the feedback from a recent transformation on one of their wards, and her words say it all: “Just wanted to share with you the feedback we have received from patients, relatives, staff and the Executive Team.
“The ward has been transformed from a boring hospital ward with nothing bright to look at to a vibrant and colourful dementia friendly environment.
“Not only has the work been done to the highest standards but was at a reasonable price.
“The flower shop is a particular talking point and an area we can take patients to for a cup of tea.
“I have recently shown the Chief Executive Deborah Saunders and the Director of Nursing Round Bev Thomas, and they were extremely impressed with what we have achieved on the ward.
“One of the views is of bluebells in a woodland and I found a patient who was standing looking at it saying how calm the picture was and how it made her feel calm.
“Just wanted you to be aware and be able to use this as a testimonial.
We plan to move onto Mulberry ward where we aim to create a calm zen environment for our spinal patients to recover in.
“From bright murals and themed areas like the flower shop, to calming nature scenes like the woodland bluebells, every element was carefully chosen to bring comfort, familiarity, and a sense of peace to patients and those living with dementia.
“We’re incredibly proud to be part of transformations like this, where thoughtful design isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about creating spaces that truly support wellbeing and dignity.”
Next stop: Mulberry Ward. We can’t wait to see what’s next!
